Savannah Guthrie Can't Talk After Her Surgery — Here's How She's Communicating with Her Kids

Though she has to remain silent for a few weeks, Savannah is "really excited" to have this health issue behind her.

After a recent surgery on her vocal chords, TODAY co-host Savannah Guthrie is finding creative new ways to communicate with her children, daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9.

As part of her recovery Savannah has to be “totally silent” for a few weeks. Initially, she was using a white board to get her point across.

See you soon! 💛” she captioned a photo of herself on Jan. 5 holding a dry erase board that said, “All good! Thanks for prayers and love!”

Just one day later, she shared in her Instagram stories that "the kids have fully taken over the white board, but all for love." She added images of a house (thoughtfully labeled "the house") with a boy in a baseball cap that was likely drawn by Charley.

Vale, on the other hand, signed her creation: a vase of flowers with a "Get well soon!" message.

There's one more way Savannah has been weighing in on all family discussions: by using two plastic game buzzers. The "no" buzzer is red with an "X" on it while the "yes" buzzer is green and has a circle on it.

Savannah captioned the video with: "Hilarious and useful gift from a friend — yes and no buttons. One guess which is getting used more."

Luckily, Savannah won’t have to use the white board and buzzers for long.

Savannah first told TODAY viewers she would be stepping away from the show to treat an issue with her voice on Dec. 19.

“I have vocal nodules, and now I also have a polyp,” she said. “It’s not a big, big deal, but I am going to have a surgery real early in the new year and be off for a couple of weeks. So it’s my last day for a little while.”

Savannah, who has been dealing with this ongoing health issue for years, seemed eager to put it behind her.

“I’m really excited about it,” she said on the show. “This has been going on for years, honestly.”
