Chef notes
This has been a favorite brunch cocktail since the 1980s, when I was catering a lot of brunch and luncheon parties. It was designed to be a citrus-juice alternative to the tomato-based bloody mary, which has certainly never fallen out of favor. What is absolutely essential in this drink is freshly squeezed orange, lemon and lime juices. Vodka is the alcohol of choice, as is Grand Marnier. You can serve Mary's Knees with the fresh fruit slices you have on hand, but I also like the fun and modern touch of oven-dried, sugar-coated thin slices of seedless oranges, blood oranges or even lemons.
